What Happens in an Islamic Counselling Session? A First-Time Guide
Starting counselling is easier when you know what to expect.
Before the first session
You may complete an intake form covering your main concern, goals, language, availability and relevant background. You do not need to diagnose yourself.
The first session
Your counsellor will ask what brought you in, how long it has been happening, what it affects and what you hope will change. You may discuss mood, anxiety, relationships, sleep, trauma, family pressures and coping. You can also explain how prayer, identity, guilt or spiritual questions connect with the problem.
Does Islamic counselling mean religious rulings?
Not automatically. Psychological care and Islamic scholarship have different roles. A faith-sensitive therapist can respect your beliefs and refer detailed fiqh questions to a qualified scholar when appropriate.
Can I discuss shameful or unwanted thoughts?
You should be able to speak honestly without moral condemnation. An unwanted thought is not automatically an intention, and needing treatment is not evidence of weak iman. Read Is It Haram to Go to Therapy?.
What if I do not want faith included?
That is your choice. Faith-sensitive care should make room for faith, not force it.
Online sessions
At Lumosouls, sessions are conducted securely online. Choose a private place, use headphones where possible and protect enough uninterrupted time.
How do I know it is a good fit?
Ask yourself: Did I feel respected? Could I speak openly? Did the practitioner understand my context without stereotyping me? Do I understand the goals and next steps?

When routine counselling is not enough
If someone is in immediate danger or cannot stay safe, seek urgent local crisis or emergency support.
